Arguably the ‘play of the day’ came from LB Oli Taylor, who not only forced a fumble but then proceeded to pick up the loose ball and then rampage in untouched from 70 yards for the first Pirates defensive touchdown in three seasons. All combined this resulted in a resounding 28 – 0 first quarter Pirates lead.
The second quarter was no different with the Pirates offence maintaining its strong start. WR Andy Custerson marked his return to action from injury with a 50 yard TD reception, beating a number of Lincoln defenders for pace to score. The defence also didn’t relent despite Lincoln reaching the red-zone on two occasions. LB Steve Omanyondo secured the second turnover of the day recovering a fumble. With Carson adding his fourth touchdown the half time score was 42 – 0 to UEA.
The second half was a slightly different story, with a number of players getting their first significant game-time of the year. Quarterback Mark Rivett had busted a 50 yard run sprung from a good downfield block in the first half, only to be tackled inside the five-yard line and see the touchdown (some may say stolen!) scored by Carson. However at the start of the third-quarter Rivett this time succeeded in completing his Michael Vick impression, traversing both sides of the line of scrimmage before scoring a 25 yard touchdown run.
The defence also stood strong throughout much of the second half, unfortunately missing out on a shut out by allowing a long touchdown run at the end of the third quarter. LB Ashley Mullin added another turnover with a spectacular diving interception. On the offensive side a number of rookies showed their potential, stepping up when given the opportunity. WR Mike O’Sullivan registered his first two catches as a Pirate from QB Jack Anklesaria, who earned valuable experience playing what is often considered the most difficult position in football.
Overall the Pirates were pleased to come out of Lincoln with a solid win and a stepping-stone to launching a playoff push.
